Today I made another visit to H2O to see if they had managed to get me a pair of Killifish and to my surprise a male and female were waiting for me in a tank all of their own. Yet again my darling husband treated me to the Killifish couple and that allowed me to purchased a few more Japanese Split-Tails.
When I first setup Wayne’s tank I bought him two Mystery Snails that have now outgrown his tank, so today I transferred them to my tank that is somewhat larger.
There is a lot of controversy about Mystery Snails and planted aquariums as many say they can eat the plants in the tank when in fact they are very beneficial for planted tanks and community tanks. Many people use them in large aquariums for waste management and algae control and if you see them eating plants it is only the melted leaves of decaying matter they are actually eating, so it is actually a myth that has circulated the internet because someone had a run of bad luck.
The only real issue is that you will need tight-fitting lid that prevents them from crawling out. Wayne once found out when he forgot to put the lid back after feeding and the next day I found that they had made their way out of the tank, lesson learnt.
I guess what it all boils down too is creating an ecosystem with enough diversity that keeps both fish and invertebrates happy, feeding both fish and invertebrates with a healthy gap so fish can pick at algae and the invertebrates become the clean up crew.
